How to lower your Stress
What are You Thinking??
What are people looking for when they come to therapy? We all want to stop suffering and the good news is that MOST of our suffering comes from the thoughts in our head. Out of frustration, many people seek a therapist because they believe it is impossible to stop the repetitive thoughts that run through our head so fast it makes it feels like it is spinning. Researchers somehow were able to track thoughts at a rate of over 50 per minute, which adds up to an average of 70,000 thoughts per day. How many of those thoughts are a rerun of past disasters and future planning? How many thoughts are in the present time? At best, maybe we spend about 10% of our time in the present moment.
OK, here’s the good news, we can learn to direct our thoughts on a pleasant journey and over-ride the tendency to plan for disasters and replay the adversities of the past. The frontier of neuroscience shows us that we have pathways in our brain that are similar to ruts in the road. Through the power of mindfulness, we can learn to bring our mind back to the present moment, building a new pathway towards happiness. If you’re going to think a lot, why not train your mind to think about happy things?
I have been successfully teaching my clients Mindfulness-based Stress reduction over the past 2 years. Clients report back that they have learned to slow down, be more present with their friends and family, and get out of those repetitive disaster scenarios quicker. When you learn to catch the thought pattern heading into a negative road, mindfulness teaches you to slow down and turn back to what is present. As Mark Twain says “I have lived a long life and had many troubles, most of which never happened.”
My wish for you is to learn mindfulness and use it daily for a happy life. It would be a pleasure for me to assist you with learning mindfulness and taking control of your thoughts, emotions and actions.
